Rolling Duffel Bags For Your Overseas Hike

With all of their straps and buckles, backpacks practically beg to be abused by baggage handlers. A duffel bag can thwart both thieves and the thugs who use your luggage as a punching bag.

Get one big enough to handle all the extra stuff - hiking boots, walking sticks, etc - that you have to lug around.

Since carrying a fully loaded duffel from one end to an airport to another is a bit of a chore, consider buying one with wheels on one end. Otherwise, buy a cheap one and drag it along behind you until it falls apart.

Once you get where you’re going, mail the duffel or drop it off in person to the hotel where you’ll be staying at the end of your hike. Make this reservation in advance, and ask if the hotel will hold a box for you.

For shipping the duffel, I pack along a flat shipping box, into which I also put my street clothes, any extra gear that doesn’t make the final cut (there’s always something) and a few supplies that I’ll appreciate having at the end of the hike, especially if I’m going to spend a few days at being a bit city tourist.
